I’m a huge .co.in and .IN fan, so I was psyched for today’s Bido auction of Success.co.in. Not Psyched about the name, but psyched about the crazy tiny possibility, if all the right bidders were present, and all the right stars were aligned, that it could hit 4 figures and jumpstart the .CO.IN market. I knew this wouldn’t happen, my prediction on INforum.in was that it would hit $200 tops, so I undershot a little bit. I wouldn’t call the sale price of $292 a “failure” persay, but it certainly wasn’t any real success either. The name got a little bit more than I would expect it to get in a quick-flip forum posting. It’s solid, but not fantastic. Just very AVERAGE. It has no real clear cut use, just another in a long line of dictionary brandables that can easily be found on the forums for $XX.

I was hoping Bido would pull something absolutely spectacular from it’s submissions to be the very first .CO.IN auction on it’s platform. It almost seemed like they chose the name based on the easy PR headline they could have had afterwards “Success is a Success at Bido!”. I love Bido, I love the whole idea. My only gripe is they only have 1 auction a day. I know that’s the whole theme of the site, but it would be nice to have maybe one .COM auction and one ccTLD auction per day. Or maybe theme weeks of all one extension, who knows. Oh yeah, I have one other gripe, I live in Hawaii so if I ever want to bid or watch the proceedings, I have to wake up way too early to catch it!

I’ll be up early soon though when MY co.in domain is featured on Bido. I’m not sure I can reveal the name, so I won’t yet. But it’s a whole lot nicer than “success”, and is a service used worldwide. 112,000,000 Google results, 35 million combined monthly searches of the term and it’s 2 close variants.

Either way my auction goes,high or low, it should be a better indicator of the health of the  current .IN/.CO.IN market than “success” was.

Ay dios mio! I think it’s awesome Sedo is doing a Spanish only domain auction. I got into domaining in early 2004, aka ‘real late’. The first thing I noticed was English .com’s were just plain GONE. Anything I tried was taken, if I was going to make any money in this business I was going to have to focus on something other than the English .com route. So the very first thing that caught my eye was IDN’s, particularly Spanish IDN’s.

The Overture tool was still around and I was finding domain after domain with “ñ” available to register! With huge scores ‘with extension’! The general opinion of IDN’s at the time was not good, they confused people, they thought they were gimmicky, etc. And 5 years later alot of folks still think that way, but some of the big guys have caught on. Well after I regged a few and saw the traffic, I didn’t care about what the geniuses on the domain forums thought about them, I had found my first niche! For the first time I was making PPC revenue with my domains, and my category killer was diseño.com ‘design.com’ in Spanish. This domain was getting constant traffic and .60 clicks. It was making $5 – $10 a day some days and I was hooked.

In 2004 I was also basically broke and when I got a good offer on the domain through Sedo. Part of me wondered if IDN’s would ever have end users or just be designated to lives of reaping PPC, so considering I was a broke newbie, I jumped at the chance to sell it for 4 figures. This money bought my my first laptop and a whole lot more  IDN domains.

And .ES! Such a fantastic extension. I was so glad to be a domainer in time for that launch. I got some good stuff and owe the fact I’m able to live off my domain income completely to Spanish domains, COM and ES.

Now it’s 2009. In 2008 I sold 7 Spanish IDN’s, most through Sedo and reported at a total of almost $20k. Some of them were sold too cheaply maybe, but I sold them to help the cause, test the market, knowing that I still had a whole lot more IDN’s stored away.

I submitted some pretty decent generic TRAFFIC IDN’s for consideration into the Sedo auction, one of them in .ES. If they ever have a Spanish Adult auction, I’ve got some high traffic beauties I could put up. I’m hoping mine or at least someone elses awesome IDN’s get accepted into the Sedo auction, the exposure would be great for everyone with IDN’s in any language. I’m gonna go reg some now, PranaDot out!

What is going on in India? It’s so sad he even needed to present a case at all. I don’t know what he paid to defend it but chances are it was more than he could probably sell it for. The case should have been “Oh, it’s a common word out of the dictionary? We find in favor of the respondent. Next.” And that goes double for “rig”. Reading decisions like this drive me crazy. I own prana dot in and co.in pointing to my site, maybe I should file a suit? Then India can give me all the domains with “prana” in them. Hmmm, now that I think about it, if I use their logic, all other 3 letter .IN domains ARE confusingly similar to some of mine, so maybe I should sue for IIN, ISN, IGN, INN, IPN, ZDN, QDN, perfect. Really, India better revamp this backwards, unjust, and short sighted INDRP process or no one will seriously invest in .IN anymore if they can lose generic names like this in the blink of an eye.

MQV.com was reported as sold on Sedo for just 2212EUR, or roughly $2900 USD! This is obviously a buyers market for LLL.com’s, even with 2 ‘bad’ the price is absurdly low. I would gladly pay $2900 for any LLL.com, I didn’t think the days of sub $3k LLL’s would ever be back. Congrats to the buyer, I guess I have to keep my eyes peeled for more deals.
I tried buying a domain this week through Sedo, a domain-related domain with 100 visitors per month. It was a generic typo, and I figured I could use the traffic from it to drive to Pranadot.com. I didn’t lowball him, I offered $500 to start and see how he would respond. I was ready to take it a little higher if necessary. So nearly a week goes by…no response…finally he gives me a counter offer. I got the email on my iphone, so I touchscreen my way into Sedo to see it…..$1,500,000! LOLOL!! Seriously what is wrong with people? It was an effing TYPO, and not even a high traffic one! That’s a ballsy counter offer considering only a handful of domains in history have sold for over $1M. And this genius thinks his two word bad typo is in the same calibur as Toys.com. In fact this seems to be a trend, I made 7 solid offers this week at Sedo and only 2 of them responded with industry average offers based in reality. The other 5 were living in a dream world.
Speaking of dream world, what on earth went on with those Sedo .ME auction results!?!? Rock.me selling for $12,000? Would many people think rockme.com was worth $12,000? Here’s the full list of auction results:

Honestly wow. With a few exceptions like message.me, locate.me, and a few others, the prices are way out of line with what the matching __________me.com would be worth, at least in my opinion. The owners of rockme.com will be pretty thrilled at all the free traffic they’ll be getting if rock.me gets highly developed and promoted…which I hope it does since someone paid $12k for it. Wow….I could get 4 bad letter LLL.com’s OR Rock.ME for $12k. Hmmmm.

But it got me thinking A) why don’t people do this more often, as in organizing the groups/clans/relationships made online in video games….and B) Why don’t people register FIRSTNAMELASTNAME.com and redirect it to their Facebook page? It makes finding you page 1000 times easier for someone, especially someone who may not even know you have a Facebook. They could just Google your name and see your domain immediately in the results. I have my name in .COM, better grab yours in case you have a doppelganger!
